Army Hockey Seniors Chile Tour Report June 2015

Although the senior team did not achieve their primary aim of retaining the outdoor Inter Service title it has otherwise been a successful season. The season was conducted in the now enduring format of two training sessions prior to the indoor Tournament, a fixture against RMAS (all three terms) in December followed by two training camps (one week each) leading into the Inter Services in March and then finished with the County Championships in May. The team has continued to be coached by Lt Col Guy Fordham and managed by SSgt Dan Cattermole and Miss Charlotte Mills.

2014/15 Season results:

Indoor Inter Services – The Men retained the title with a convincing win against the RAF and a hard fought win against a strong Navy side. The Army seems to have closed the gap with the Navy in the indoor format now and look forward to trying to dominate in this competition over the coming seasons.

RMAS – This continues to be a useful fixture, and is used primarily to spot any talent coming through RMAS and highlight players that might play one off fixtures for the senior side whilst still in training. The Army won the fixture 8-1 and three players were highlighted as potential army players.

Training Camp 1 – The Army played 3 fixtures during this first week of training. A 5-0 win against Fleet HC, a 4-2 Loss against Haslemere HC and then the team put in a great performance against a very strong Team Bath Buccaneers 2nd XI and drew 1-1.

Training Camp 2 – The second camp saw the Army play one fixture in Aldershot against Woking HC which ended in a narrow Army Victory and the side then travelled to Gibraltar for three days and played fixtures against the Eagles HC and Grammarians HC. The Army beat the Eagles 5-3 with special mention to LCpl Shane Vincent who scored a six minute second half hat-trick and then fought hard for a 1-1 draw with a strong Grammarians side.

Outdoor Inter Services – A disappointing tournament for the Army side saw them draw 2-2 with the RAF on day one and then lose to the Navy 3-0 on the second day. The tournament was always going to be tight and having had excellent preparation the team went into it feeling confident, however a below par performance in a one off match against the Navy let us down.

County Championships – The Army played in Pool 1 of the C Division, which was hosted in Swindon by Wiltshire. The team played three matches against, Wiltshire, Cumbria and Nottinghamshire. The coach, Lt Col Guy Fordham, had to drop out at the last minute so by skipper, Maj Jon Hooker, and SSgt Dan Cattermole stepped in. The tournament started with a disappointing 4-3 loss to Wiltshire, but the team responded well with wins of 4-1 and 4-2 against Cumbria and Notts respectively. This was a great result for the side and now sees them take on Surrey in the Semi Final on 30 May at Old Loughtonians HC. This is a notable achievement as the last time the Army played in the County Championships Finals was in 2007.

Future Focus:

This season the team has the Tour to Chile in June to look forward to which will see us play six fixtures in ten days against local club sides and the Chile National U21 team. There is also the possibility of a triangular tournament with the Hockey 4 Heroes team on Armed Forces day, 27 June, but this is still in the planning stages. Next season the focus will be on regaining the Outdoor Inter Service title
